Smart Air Plane Accident at Papua Ilaga Airport, This is What the Airline Says

A plane crash occurred at Aminggu Ilaga Airport, Puncak Regency , Papua , Monday (25/10/2021) morning. Smart Air ‘s cargo plane from Smart Aviation failed to complete, resulting in the pilot’s death.

Regarding this, the management of Smart Aviation has not been able to determine the cause of the accident that befell one of its planes with the flight code PK-SNN at Aminggaru Airport.

“I don’t dare to comment on the cause of the accident that happened to our plane at Ilaga. What is clear is that later there will be an investigation by the NTSC and the Ministry of Transportation,” said Pilot Captain Alan Satria Purnama as Head of the Smart Air Representative Office in Timika, Monday (25/10/2021).

He mentioned that during the flight from Timika’s Mozes Kilangin Airport to Aminggaru Ilaga Airport on Monday morning, the Cesna Grand Caravan type Smart Air plane carried basic necessities for the community.

“All the basic necessities of the community such as chicken meat, vegetables and others. The plane flew from Timika Airport at 07.40 WIT and arrived at Ilaga Airport at 08.15 WIT,” said Captain Alan, who was flying by plane Smart Air from Nabire Airport to Sugapa Airport, Intan Jaya.

As a result of the incident on the runway, Pilot Captain Kuntardi died on his way to the Ilaga Health Center.

“He died at Ilaga Hospital. After the incident, he was unconscious so he was immediately taken to a hospital which is quite a distance from Ilaga Airport. When he arrived at the hospital, he was declared dead,” said Alan.

The body of Captain Pilot Kuntardi was dispatched to Jakarta on Monday evening on a Batik Air flight from Timika Airport.

The plan is to arrive in Jakarta, he will be buried immediately,” he said.

The Co-pilot Baskoro who was on the Smart Air flight that crashed had also been evacuated to Timika and is currently undergoing treatment at the Mimika Hospital. “The copilot is still fine, still conscious.

When he was evacuated to Timika, the doctor at Ilaga Hospital asked about his condition and stated that he was ready to be referred to Mimika Hospital, which has more adequate health facilities,” said Alan. Smart Aviation operates three Cesna Grand Caravan aircraft at Timika Airport.

Every day it serves flights carrying cargo of goods and passengers to Ilaga and a number of small/pioneer airports in the interior of Papua. For this incident, Captain Alan hopes that all pilots and co-pilots who operate small-bodied aircraft to the interior of Papua will be extra careful considering the terrain in Papua is very difficult with weather conditions that can change drastically at any time.

Public Relations of Mimika Hospital Lucky Mahakena said the body of Pilot Captain Kuntardi was evacuated from Ilaga to Timika on Monday morning to be recirculated and then washed and then tested for Covid-19 RDT.

“The results of the RDT examination of the deceased were negative, so it was possible for the body to be sent to Jakarta,” said Lucky.
